What Are The Qualities Of Police Dogs?

What are the qualities of police dogs?

Generally, we are able to recognize a police dog. However, not all the qualities of this type of dog are known. In the following article we will talk about the peculiarities of these animals so present in society.

We will prove to you that they are intelligent, sociable and also very affectionate dogs.

The most common breed of police dog is the German Shepherd. They were considered very valiant dogs in Europe, especially among the medieval noble lords. These animals were used by the armed forces even before the First World War.

Later, other breeds were added to the police force for various purposes:  the Labrador, the Golden Retriever and the Rottweiler. Here are some functions they perform:

  • Locate the bombs.
  • Identify weapons and narcotics.
  • Saving people during natural disasters.
  • Recognize suspects or missing persons.

The characteristics that police dogs must have

First of all, dogs must have some natural qualities to be able to undergo certain training from an early age. Discipline and type of training differentiate them from a domestic dog or a common animal.

The main characteristic and the first that is analyzed in a puppy, is the interest and curiosity it shows in play and physical exercise. Good training relies on the innate energy of dogs.

The energy of the mind must be accompanied by a resistant, strong and imposing physique. Police dogs must convey respect and a certain authority.

Hunter instinct is very important when training a police dog. The teaching of search, rescue and chase techniques are based on the instinctive ability of hunting dogs.

What are the main functions performed by police dogs?

The training of this type of dog is perfected day by day. Nowadays, the duties of police dogs are classified into 4 groups:

1. Detection.

When dealing with detecting explosives, mines, tobacco, exotic animals, narcotics and much more.

2. Intervention.

When used for protection, to save hostages or to search for criminals.

3. Rescue.

Many times, police dogs have been the only ones able to save lives during natural disasters thanks to their developed nose.

4. Scientific activities.

They are used to find dead bodies and to recognize suspects.

The innate abilities of the German Shepherd, combined with physical stamina, loyalty and incredible intelligence, make him the ideal dog to perform all 4 functions.

Additional qualities of police dogs

A prerequisite is intelligence. A dog that is unable to obey and immediately respond to the commands of its handler will never be able to join the police.

The ability to concentrate must be so high that the “litmus test” for police dogs is to ignore a female in heat. It is a question of repressing their natural instincts, and this demonstrates an uncommon obedience.

A police dog’s training and socialization process must begin while the animal is still a puppy.

The first commands are the classic ones:

  • Sitting.
  • Stopped.
  • Stay.
  • You come.
  • Search and return an object.

The physical state must be flawless. Puppies with deformities, bone deformities or any other disease cannot become police dogs.

Training and exercises require a lot of strength and physical endurance. A weak physique can result in the animal’s death, compromise operations and endanger the lives of officers and civilians.

All of these characteristics are equally important during training. However, the most developed quality in a police dog is the sense of smell.

Logically,  police dogs exist because of their ability to relate to and be loyal to humans. For this, the characteristics of these animals must be a reflection of those of police officers.

It is impossible to educate a police dog without the guidance of a responsible and professional person in their work.

Regardless of breed, color or age, all dogs are capable of giving and receiving love. Thanks to the different types of training,  many of them have become real professionals thanks to the enhancement of their innate skills.
