Tips For Taking A Cat To The Vet

Tips for taking a cat to the vet

Cats, unlike dogs, are not likely to leave the house. And if it comes to taking them to the vet, even worse. Lovers of these little cats get distressed when this time comes.

So that taking a cat to a vet does not become a problem for him or for you, follow these tips:

Go with the cat to the vet. Mission Impossible?

It is necessary to remain calm. A cat can sense if its owner is nervous, becoming one in turn.

To take him outside, use a pet carrier. To choose the most suitable model, we recommend that you think about practicality. The ones that have the entrance on the front work best. And also those that can be opened or removed from above.

“Arguing” with the cat to put it in the carrier is not ideal. The animal must naturally familiarize itself with the object and must also feel it as its own. For this, it must be left open in a room of the house in which the animal likes to sleep. If he shows indifference, you can put in games he likes, or even snacks.

Once the feline has learned to enter it on its own, the next move will be to have it take small walks inside the house. Some cats even sleep inside the carrier. If you have the opportunity, let them also take walks on the street and small trips in the car.

On the day of the visit, spray pheromones inside the cage  30 minutes before going out. In this way, the cat will calm down.

Taking the cat to the vet in your arms: a bad idea

It is not advisable to carry the cat to the vet in your arms and not in the carrier. Although some animals rest in the arms of their owners, most tend to lose control if they feel threatened.

A dog and cat carrying bag could be a solution,  preferably if it is models with holes or nylon. This way, the animal will be able to see outside and breathe easily.

The bottom of the bag must be rigid. For the feline it will be even more uncomfortable to travel enclosed in a space where it cannot stand.

Getting used to car journeys

If the veterinary clinic is not near your home, you need to get your cat accustomed to  traveling by car.

During the journey, isolate it from the noise coming from the street. Furthermore, it is essential that the interior of the vehicle is well ventilated, especially in summer.

If you don’t have a car and use the means to take your cat to the vet,  the animal must have been used to it previously.

In the waiting room

Most of the time, you have to wait some time in veterinary clinics. During this time, the animal may fidget.

You have to make him wait inside the carrier (or bag) placed on your legs. Talk to him and caress him frequently only if you have the opportunity to insert your hand inside the cage, not giving him a way to escape.

If there are also dogs in the room, the situation could be tense. Position the cat from the back and avoid any dogs approaching the carrier.

The return home

If the cat coexists with other animals of its own species, it is possible that the companions will prove strange towards the animal that has just returned home. This is because the smell of animals changes when they are taken to the vet. You have to be patient.
