Pilot takes off in the car and saves a dog's life

Through social networks, news spread about a Uruguayan driver during the second stage of the CODASUR international championship, which was run in Bolivia. Uruguayan driver Fernando Zuasnabar became famous for his maneuver to save the life of a dog  crossing the road in the middle of the rally.

In a stretch of the route the pilot finds himself a little dog in the middle of the track. Luck, fate or the driver’s expertise required the car to lift off the ground thousandths of a second before hitting the dog.

Immediately afterwards, organizers and policemen took it upon themselves to remove the animal from the circuit.

What to do if a dog has been run over?

If on some occasion we see our animal limp, drag some paws or have even paralyzed it, and also areas with no hair or with torn fur because it was dragged on the ground, dirty with grease or oil in the wounds or in the skin, the most likely thing. is that he was the victim of an accident and that we have to save his life.

The correct way to do it is to keep the animal in the rescue position, i.e. make it lie on its right side and cover it with a blanket. Giving him warmth is very important. Furthermore, we must act quickly, but with serenity.

After you have covered and warmed him, you need to take him to the nearest veterinary clinic right away. It is necessary to carry out a radiological examination to know with certainty which areas were affected.

First aid to save a dog’s life

If we want to do something to help the affected animal, we can try to stop the bleeding by pressing the area with a clean cloth, gauze or cotton, applying them one on top of the other without removing the previous one.

Tourniquets in the legs can only be applied as a last resort and for a few minutes (never more than 15) using cloth patches and avoiding rubber bands or ropes. For this purpose, it is possible to introduce a splint or a pencil into the knot and pass the cloth over the wound several times to tighten the bandage and stop the bleeding and, thus, save the life of the animal.

In case the dog has any broken bones, we will immobilize him with the help of a splint.

When the bleeding is light, a clean gauze or cloth should be applied to the wound.  In a second moment, you have to press hard, so that the blood clots. It is essential to save the dog’s life.

If the wound produced is important and the blood is light red in the legs, the brachial artery in the anterior ones and the femoral artery in the posterior ones must be compressed.

It can happen that a vein is compromised, in which case the blood will have a dark red color. If this happens, place a tourniquet 5 centimeters from the wound towards the end of the leg and, at the same time, tie a knot through which a pencil or stick can pass to tighten it until the blood stops flowing.

The walk with the dog

We never know what can happen while walking or exercising with our dog, injuries or injuries can show up at any time. For this reason, all owners should have some basic first aid knowledge.

If during the walk our pet has a mishap, injures himself and bleeds deeply due to a cut or bite from another dog, it is important to intervene and put a muzzle on him immediately.

An injured animal, even if it is very familiar with us,  can become violent and have a tendency to bite, even its owner.

The dangers of the road

A dog tends to run by nature, whether to play or to chase a car, a cat, etc. We need to be aware of how dangerous it can be for our dog to run on roads where vehicles run at full speed.

It is important, from the first moment, to train our pet so that it always remains next to us during walks. In this way, we will avoid possible accidents and, in the worst of circumstances, the animal losing its life.

Statistics show that around ten million dogs are hit in traffic accidents. It has also been seen that, with a correct education given to your dog, 70% of these problems would not exist.
