The Arabian horse, history and characteristics

History and origin

The Arabian horse would appear to be one of the oldest breeds. Some archaeological excavations seem to prove its existence as early as 4500 years ago. Even if today’s characteristics are not exactly the same, it is still plausible to assume that the Arabian horse has very ancient origins.

This type of horse originates in the eastern deserts. Thanks to trade and wars, it then expanded. His attitudes such as speed, elegance, strength and bone strength were soon appreciated by many. To the point that during its expansion, the Arabian horse was used to improve other breeds. This is why modern horse breeds all have characteristics of the Arabian horse.

At the beginning this animal was looked after by the nomads of the area, who even reserved for it a place in a tent to protect it from the elements. This has allowed the animal from the beginning to establish a particular relationship with humans that favors obedience, learning and satisfaction.

Despite the quiet nature, the Arabian horse was often used during wars, due to its great strength and other attitudes such as the sense of alertness, characteristics that made it perfect for this use. This means that, over the years, the owners of an Arabian horse must learn to treat him with respect and specific skills.

Characteristics of the Arabian horse

Head

The head is elongated, but with a fine and elegant line. Big forehead, as well as eyes. It has as its characteristic two large and wide nasal pits, and a small muzzle on the contrary.

Body

The sturdy hips widen the lower back, on the tip of which is a long and thick tail that falls like a waterfall on the back of the animal.

The bones of the Arabian horse are strong and sturdy, allowing it to have structured and powerful legs.

Dimension

According to the American Equestrian Federation, the standard height of this breed varies between 143.3 and 153.4 centimeters. In addition to these, slightly shorter or slightly taller specimens were also accepted as purebreds.

In Europe and America, however, these dimensions did not seem to be sufficient. For this there was a time when the Arabian horse was crossed with other breeds to reach an average height between 152.4 and 162.6.

Character of the Arabian horse

The proximity to people allowed this animal to assume, from the beginning, a docile and easy to train attitude. By virtue of this, in the United States this breed is even used for sports competitions reserved for under 18s.

The intelligence of this horse, combined with its great sensitivity and its ease of relating to humans, has made it an animal with rapid learning and great communication skills.

Despite this, these same qualities push us to interact with him in a respectful way, without harshness, since they are able to learn bad habits as quickly as they learn good ones. For this reason, if the horse is treated harshly and inexperience, it will often end up rebelling.

After getting to know the world of the Arabian horse better, it is evident that each breed must be considered as a world apart, each with their own beauty and characteristics. And you? What do you think of this majestic animal?
