Garlic, An Excellent Pesticide

Garlic, an excellent pesticide

We all know the exceptional properties of garlic. It can be used to prevent disease as well as to treat other abnormalities. Well, this food is also very beneficial for our pets, as it is an excellent pesticide.

We explain everything we know about it and how to use it to win the battle between your pet and the parasites.

Can garlic be used for our animals?

It has always been said that garlic is toxic to our animals. And this is not a lie. This food has a toxic component known as n-propyl disulfide. However, this does not cause any harm, as long as its consumption is moderate.

Otherwise, it could damage cells in the body and suffer other ailments such as anemia. A study conducted in Zurich, Switzerland, set out to establish which dose is not harmful to our animals.

Well, after various analyzes, it was concluded that garlic could become toxic if more than 5 grams are administered for each kilo of body weight. In general, a single clove of garlic weighs between 2 and 3 grams, so an average-sized dog would have to ingest at least 5 cloves a day to suffer damage.

So, we now know that we can use this vegetable for our animals as long as such use is moderate. Let’s see how.

Since ancient times, also due to the fact that it has been used on people, it has been proven that garlic is vermifuge. This means that it is able to act against intestinal parasites. This happens because, after being ingested, its remarkable antibacterial properties remain intact in the stomach.

It also cleanses the blood, acts as a digestive tonic and helps the body keep itself clean. It also strengthens the immune system and prevents the presence of future parasites.

How to use garlic with our animals

The best way to feed garlic to our animals is natural. Adding 1 or 2 cloves of garlic per day to our pet’s food will help him win his battle against parasites.

It is recommended to do this for at least a week and, later on, even if you are not aware of the presence of parasites, repeat the process. It is advisable to do this at least once or twice a year, to make sure that our pet is free from parasites.

According to the Zurich study, the dose should be a maximum of two cloves per day. This applies to a medium-sized animal. But if it is larger, the dose may increase, while if it is smaller, it may decrease.

However, this is a home remedy that may not be ideal for all dogs or effective with all parasites. For this reason, as we always tell you, don’t forget to ask your veterinarian if this remedy is valid for your pet.

Other home remedies valid as pesticides

Home remedies are a favorite of many, before drugs and toxic products. Today we want everything to be as natural as possible and the positive note is that natural things work.

These are some remedies for parasites:

  • Ticks and fleas : mint, eucalyptus, apple cider vinegar and lavender water.
  • Gastric parasites : pumpkin seeds, lemon seeds, wheat germ oil or cod liver oil.

Almost all home remedies work most effectively when administered directly mixed with the pet’s food. However, if your vet has given you permission to use them and your pet can’t stand them, look for another way to administer them.
